Yilin Verse
下堂出門,東至九山。逢福值喜,得其安閑。
Descending the hall and passing through the gate, journeying east to the nine mountains. Meeting fortune and finding joy, one attains peace and leisure.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind and thunder join forces below, bestowing increase; the transformation leads to pure heaven, doubled and self-renewing. The verse depicts someone stepping down from the hall and out the gate, journeying east to the Nine Mountains, where fortune and joy await in tranquil ease. This is the image of a person who, having received benefit, ventures forth with confidence. The 'Nine Mountains' evoke the sacred peaks of imperial inspection tours, places where heaven's mandate is confirmed. No danger threatens because the traveler moves in alignment with the natural order. From Increase to the Creative, the dynamic is one of generous endowment refined into self-generating initiative: what was given as a gift now becomes intrinsic strength, and the recipient walks freely into an open horizon.
