Yilin Verse

憂驚以除,禍不成災,安全以來。

Worry and alarm have departed; disaster does not become calamity. Safety and wholeness arrive at last.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind and thunder bestow increase, and the transformation leads to the mountain above thunder — the watchful stillness of Nourishment. Anxiety and alarm are dispelled; calamity does not ripen into disaster, and safety arrives at last. The verse captures the moment of deliverance: what seemed threatening dissolves before it can crystallize into real harm. The terseness of the language mirrors the simplicity of the resolution — no heroic intervention, just the natural dissipation of danger when the conditions shift. From Increase to Nourishment, the dynamic is one of careful provision. The mountain stands above the rumbling thunder, containing its energy. Increase addresses the crisis by providing exactly what is needed: not excess, not force, but the measured sustenance that transforms fear into security.
