Yilin Verse
鳴鴻俱飛,北就魚池。鱣鮪鰋鯉,多饒所有。一笱獲兩,利之過倍。
Calling geese fly together, heading north to the fish pond. Sturgeon, bream, catfish, and carp — abundance beyond measure. One basket-trap catches a pair; the profit doubles the cost.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind and thunder bestow increase, and the transformation leads to fire rising above the earth — the bright advance of Progress. Wild geese cry and fly together, heading north toward the fish ponds. Sturgeon, catfish, and carp abound in rich profusion. A single fish trap captures two at once — the profit doubles the expectation. The northward flight of geese toward teeming waters is an image of purposeful migration to abundant resources. The doubled catch from a single trap is the essence of Increase perfected: not merely enough, but surplus beyond anticipation. From Increase to Progress, the advance follows naturally. Fire emerging above the earth illuminates the path forward; the gentleman makes his own virtue shine. Those who move in concert toward clear abundance find that the yield surpasses even generous expectations.
