Yilin Verse

麒麟鳳凰,善政得祥。陰陽和調,國无災殃。

Qilin and phoenix — good governance brings forth auspicious signs. Yin and yang blend in harmony; the state is free from calamity.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind and thunder bestow increase, and the transformation leads to wind issuing from fire — the radiant warmth of the Family. Qilin and phoenix appear: auspicious omens summoned by virtuous governance. Yin and yang are harmoniously balanced, and the state suffers no calamity. The qilin and phoenix are the supreme tokens of cosmic approval, appearing only when a sage ruler's virtue has brought the world into alignment. Their manifestation is not the cause of peace but its confirmation — the resonance between earthly governance and celestial order made visible. From Increase to the Family, the transformation is natural: wind issues from fire as warmth radiates outward from a well-tended hearth. The increase of virtue within the household extends as gentle influence to the state, and the auspicious creatures respond to what has already been achieved.
