Yilin Verse
狼戾美謀,无言不殊。允厭帝心,悅以獲佑。
The wolf is cruel yet cunning in counsel; no word fails to prove decisive. Truly it pleases the emperor's heart; with joy one receives his blessing.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Lake risen above heaven — a single yin line at the top is about to be expelled. The verse invokes a wolf's cunning schemes, each plan more vicious than the last, yet none succeeds in dividing the court. The decisive leader sees through every stratagem and wins the confidence of the sovereign, earning lasting favor and joy. 'Allowing to fill the emperor's heart' echoes the rhetoric of loyal ministers whose frank counsel prevails over treachery. From Breakthrough to the Creative, the pattern is one of decisive elimination giving way to pure, self-generating initiative. Once the last trace of corruption is cut away, what remains is undivided strength — heaven doubled, the creative power that drives itself forward without external support.
