Yilin Verse

醉臥道傍,迷旦失明,不全我生。

Drunk, lying by the roadside; confused past dawn, losing sight. One's life cannot be preserved.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Lake risen above heaven collapses into the thunder and fire of abundance. Drunk, one lies by the roadside, vision blurred as if dawn itself has been lost. 'Not completing my life' — this may end fatally. The drunkard sprawled in the road has surrendered all agency; he cannot see, cannot rise, and is exposed to every passing danger. From Breakthrough to Abundance, the combination should be magnificent — thunder and lightning together bring the fullness of power and clarity. But the verse shows abundance's shadow: excess leading to incapacitation. The one who overindulges in the feast of Abundance loses not just his way but his life. The cup that should celebrate plenitude becomes the instrument of self-destruction.
