Yilin Verse
東行破車,步入危家。衡門垂倒,无以為主。賣袍續食,糟糠不飽。
Traveling east, the cart breaks down; on foot one enters a house of peril. The crossbeam gate hangs near collapse; there is no one to serve as master. Selling one's robe to continue eating; even chaff and husks do not suffice.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Lake risen above heaven crashes down as heaven and water diverge. Traveling east, the cart breaks apart; one stumbles on foot into a dangerous household. The crossbar of the gate hangs crooked, about to collapse — there is no master here. Selling one's robe just to eat, yet even chaff and husks do not fill the belly. Every detail paints destitution compounding itself: transportation fails, shelter crumbles, sustenance runs out. From Breakthrough to Conflict, the clean stroke of decisive action gives way to the crossed purposes of heaven moving one way and water another. What should have been a liberating resolution instead leaves its subject stranded, dispossessed, and contending with forces that pull in opposite directions.
