Yilin Verse

關雎淑女,賢妃聖偶。宜家壽母,福祿長久。

The osprey cries for the virtuous maiden; a worthy consort, a sage's match. She blesses the home and honors the mother; fortune and favor endure long.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath heaven heralds a virtuous union. The ospreys cry by the river islet — the opening poem of the Book of Songs celebrates the modest maiden as a fit match for the lord. The verse extends the image: a worthy consort, a sage's partner, one who brings blessing to the household and longevity to the mother-in-law, with fortune and prosperity enduring through the generations. The Guanju allusion signals a marriage founded on propriety and mutual admiration, not mere passion. From Coming to Meet to Innocence, heaven's thunder roars across the earth in natural, unforced movement. The encounter of Gou achieves its highest expression: a meeting conducted with integrity that produces blessings untainted by ulterior motive.
