Yilin Verse
監諸攻玉,无不穿鑿。麟鳳成形,德象君子。三仁翼事,所求必喜。
Inspecting gems, polishing jade; nothing it cannot pierce and carve. Qilin and phoenix take shape; virtue mirrors the noble man. Three sages lend their wings; whatever is sought must bring joy.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath heaven polishes raw stone into sacred form. 'Use stones from other mountains to cut jade' — the proverb from the Book of Songs speaks of bringing outside expertise to refine native talent. Through ceaseless carving and boring, qilin and phoenix take shape, their virtue resembling that of the gentleman. The Three Benevolent Ones of Shang — Weizi, Jizi, and Bigan — lend their wings to the enterprise, and whatever is sought brings happiness. From Coming to Meet to Great Exceeding, the lake submerges the trees in an extraordinary crisis that only extraordinary people can navigate. The encounter of Gou here recruits the right craftsmen and the right counselors, transforming raw encounter into enduring artistry.
