Yilin Verse

喜笑且語,不能掩口。官爵並至,慶賀盈戶。

Laughing and chatting with delight, unable to cover the mouth. Rank and title arrive together; congratulations fill the household.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath heaven announces glad tidings that cannot be contained. Laughter and chatter overflow, mouths unable to close from joy. Official rank and noble titles arrive together, and congratulatory guests fill the doorway. The verse radiates unrestrained happiness — the kind that renders composure impossible. From Coming to Meet to Influence, the lake rests upon the mountain as the youngest daughter draws near to the youngest son: mutual attraction, natural resonance, the empty heart that receives freely. Gou's encounter here achieves its most spontaneous fulfillment. The joy is not performed but irrepressible, and the honors that follow are the natural consequence of a connection that moves others to respond in kind.
