Yilin Verse
大都王市,稠人多寶。公孫宜賈,資貨萬倍。
The great capital, the king's market; dense crowds, abundant treasure. Lord Sun is skilled at trade; his capital returns ten-thousandfold.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath heaven opens a vast marketplace. The great capital and royal bazaar teem with crowds and overflow with treasures. Gongsun is suited to commerce, and his investments return ten-thousandfold. The verse celebrates commercial abundance at its most spectacular — not a village market but the imperial capital's grand bazaar, where fortunes are made overnight. 'Gongsun' may be a generic noble surname used for any well-positioned merchant, or may echo the Shiji's accounts of merchant-statesmen. From Coming to Meet to Increase, wind and thunder move together in mutual enhancement. Gou's encounter becomes an engine of multiplication: what meets combines and amplifies, as goods and capital find their perfect exchange.
