Yilin Verse
不改柯葉,和氣中適。君子所在,安无怵惕。
Not changing branch or leaf; harmonious energy perfectly balanced. Where the noble man abides, there is peace and no alarm.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath heaven preserves its own nature through steady constancy. Branches and leaves remain unchanged, the temperate harmony perfectly balanced. Where the gentleman resides, there is peace without alarm or anxiety. The verse celebrates effortless stability — a tree that keeps its form through the seasons, a person whose equanimity requires no struggle. 'Not changing branch or leaf' suggests an evergreen constancy, immune to the seasonal stripping that afflicts deciduous growth. From Coming to Meet to Development, the tree grows gradually upon the mountain in natural, unhurried progression. Gou's encounter here produces not disruption but gentle adaptation: the meeting integrates smoothly, like a new branch that extends the canopy without disturbing its shape.
