Yilin Verse

克身潔己,逢禹巡狩。錫我玄圭,拜受福祉。

Disciplining the self, purifying one's person; meeting Yu on his royal progress. He bestows upon me the dark jade tablet; I bow and receive this blessing.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath heaven conducts a royal audience. One disciplines the body and purifies the self, then encounters Yu the Great on his inspection tour of the realm. Yu bestows a dark jade tablet — the xuangui, symbol of the highest imperial favor — and one bows to receive this blessing. The encounter with Yu represents the meeting of personal moral cultivation with sovereign recognition: only one who has 'conquered the self and purified conduct' merits the sage-king's acknowledgment. From Coming to Meet to Before Completion, fire sits above water in a state not yet resolved. The dark jade is received, yet the journey is unfinished: Gou's most exalted encounter points forward, promising what is earned but not yet fully realized.
