Yilin Verse
南山蘭芝,君子所有。東家淑女,生我玉寶。
On the southern mountain, orchid and lingzhi; these belong to the noble man. The virtuous woman of the eastern house gives birth to my jade treasure.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Lake upon earth gives way to heaven with fire, the open fellowship of kindred spirits. On the southern mountains grow orchid and lingzhi, treasures claimed by the noble lord. From the house to the east comes a virtuous woman who bears a jade-like child. The verse radiates felicity: rare botanical symbols of moral excellence pair with the auspicious union of worthy families. Orchid and lingzhi on the southern slope echo the Shijing tradition of gathering fragrant herbs as emblems of virtue. From Gathering to Fellowship, the transformation shows how genuine communal assembly naturally produces harmony between families. The gathered community becomes the matchmaker, connecting excellence with excellence, producing something precious from the union.
