Yilin Verse

霧露雪霜,日暗不明,陰孽為疾,年穀大傷。

Fog and dew, snow and frost; the sun dims and gives no light. Dark forces breed affliction; the year's harvest suffers great ruin.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Lake upon earth transforms into fire within the lake, the volatile Revolution. Fog, dew, snow, and frost darken the sun. Yin excess breeds pestilence, and the year's harvest suffers grave damage. The verse presents a comprehensive atmospheric assault: every form of moisture, from mist to frozen precipitation, conspires to blot out the sun. The crops, dependent on sunlight, fail under this relentless siege. Yin excess manifesting as disease attacks both the human body and the agricultural body simultaneously. From Gathering to Revolution, the transformation suggests that what has accumulated must be overthrown. Fire within the lake implies mutual destruction: the old order, waterlogged and diseased, must be burned away before a new calendar can begin.
