Yilin Verse
公劉之居,太王所業。可以長生,拜受福爵。
The dwelling that Gongliu established, the enterprise that Taiwang built upon. Here one may live in long prosperity, bowing to receive blessings and rank.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wood grows within the earth, and the verse invokes two legendary Zhou ancestors: Gongliu, who settled the people at Bin and revived Hou Ji's agricultural tradition, and the Great King (Tai Wang), who migrated from Bin to the foot of Mount Qi and founded the territorial base of the Zhou dynasty. Their patient, generational work yields long life, blessings, and noble rank for all who follow. Earth over heaven, the image of Peace, shows heaven and earth mingling freely in perfect exchange. From Pushing Upward to Peace, the gradual cultivation of land and people across generations culminates in the golden age of cosmic harmony. Gongliu planted; Tai Wang built; their descendants reaped the fullness of the Zhou mandate.
