Yilin Verse

日中為市,各抱所有;交易資貨,貪珠懷寶。心悅歡喜。

At midday the market opens; each brings what they possess. Exchanging goods and wares, coveting pearls, cherishing treasures. The heart is pleased and joyful.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth above heaven, Peace finds expression in the marketplace at noon. At the day's zenith, merchants gather, each carrying their wares. Goods and currencies exchange hands, everyone covets pearls and treasures; hearts are filled with delight. This verse directly echoes the Xici Zhuan's description of Shennong establishing midday markets. The noon market is the paradigm of fair exchange — maximum sunlight ensures transparency. From Peace to Pushing Upward, trees grow within the earth, the gentleman accumulates small gains into greatness. The transformation traces how equitable commerce becomes the engine of steady ascent: each fair trade is a root extending deeper, each honest exchange builds upward incrementally.
