Yilin Verse

延頸遠望,昧為目病。不見叔姬,使伯憂心。

Craning the neck, gazing far; the eyes grow dim with illness. Not seeing the younger sister, the elder brother's heart is filled with worry.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wood grows within the earth as someone cranes their neck, gazing far into the distance, but failing eyesight clouds the view into darkness. The elder brother cannot see his younger sister Shuji, and anxiety gnaws at his heart without relief. The scene evokes a kinsman separated from family, straining to catch sight of a loved one across an impossible distance while his own vision betrays him. Earth over mountain, the image of Modesty, hides strength within lowliness — the mountain sinking into the ground. From Pushing Upward to Modesty, the ascending impulse reverses as the mountain descends. The one who rises cannot find what matters most; the higher the vantage, the more painful the absence.
