Yilin Verse
假文翰翼,隨風偕北。至虞夏國,興愛相得。年歲大樂,邑无盜賊。
Borrowing patterned wings, it follows the wind and flies northward. Reaching the realm of Yu and Xia, it finds love and mutual accord. The years bring great joy; the domain is free of thieves.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wood grows within the earth, and borrowing the wings of literature and culture, one travels northward with the wind. Arriving at a realm reminiscent of the golden ages of Yu and Xia, love and trust are mutually attained between ruler and people. Years of great joy follow; no thieves trouble the towns and villages. The verse envisions cultural transmission carried on wind and wing — the spread of civilizing influence that transforms distant lands into peaceful, prosperous communities. Thunder over wind, the image of Duration, stands without changing direction. From Pushing Upward to Duration, the ascending impulse consolidates into enduring stability. What rose through cultivation now persists: a harmonious order that maintains itself through its own internal coherence.
