Yilin Verse
鳶生會稽,稍巨能飛。翱翔桂林,為眾鳥雄。
The kite is born at Kuaiji; growing large, it learns to fly. Soaring above the cinnamon groves, it becomes lord among all birds.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wood grows within the earth; a kite hatches at Kuaiji and grows gradually until it can take flight. Soaring over the forests of Guilin, it becomes chief among all birds, commanding the sky. The kite — a raptor of keen sight and commanding wingspan — starts small in the marshes of the southeast, then rises through patient maturation to dominate the heavens above. Earth containing water, the image of the Army, evokes disciplined multitudes led by a single strong figure from obscurity into power. From Pushing Upward to the Army, organic growth transforms into organized strength. The kite's ascent from Kuaiji to aerial supremacy mirrors the commander who rises from modest origins to marshal great forces under a single will.
