Yilin Verse
安平不傾,載福長生,君子以寧。
Peaceful and level, never toppling; bearing blessings and long life, the noble lord finds tranquility.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wood grows within the earth, and the world stands level and utterly secure. Peaceful, untilting, carrying blessings and long life, the gentleman dwells in tranquility with nothing to disturb his rest. Water resting upon earth, the image of Holding Together, shows people naturally gathering where conditions are stable and the land can sustain them. The verse offers a luminous vision of political and personal contentment: no danger of collapse, no threat of upheaval, only steady accumulation of benefit over time. From Pushing Upward to Holding Together, the slow, rooted growth of wood through earth produces a landscape so settled that others naturally converge upon it. The ascending impulse, having reached stable ground, becomes the center around which community forms.
