Yilin Verse

大足長股,利出行道。囷倉充盈,䟽齒善市。宜錢富家,事得萬倍。

Great feet and long legs, profitable for traveling the road. Granaries brim and overflow; with fine teeth one trades well at market. Wealth enriches the household; in every affair, a hundredfold return.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

A lake without water, yet the verse overflows with bounty. Great feet and long legs stride freely along the road. Granaries and round bins brim with grain, the spaced-tooth comb works the market well. Wealth suits the household; returns multiply a hundredfold. The imagery is entirely commercial: a body built for travel, storehouses full, sharp trading instincts, profits compounding. From Oppression to Enthusiasm, thunder bursts from the earth in a joyous release. The ancient kings used this image to compose music in praise of virtue. Oppression breaks open into exuberant prosperity, the stored energy of hardship erupting into movement and celebration. The feet that were trapped now stride; the empty granary now overflows.
