Yilin Verse
持心懼怒,善數搖動。不安其處,散災府藏,无有利得。
The heart held in dread and rage, ever shaking and unsettled. Finding no rest in its place, the treasury's stores scatter; there is no gain to be had.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire within the lake transforms into thunder above heaven — Great Power, where strength surges beyond containment. The heart is gripped by fear and anger, constantly agitated and shaken. Unable to settle in one place, disasters scatter the treasury, and no profit remains. Great Power's thunder in heaven should be majestic force properly directed. Instead, the verse describes inner turbulence — a heart oscillating between terror and rage — that radiates outward as financial ruin. The treasury scatters because the mind cannot hold steady. From Revolution to Great Power, the transformation reveals that revolutionary energy without emotional stability becomes self-destructive: the ram that butts the fence with excessive force entangles its own horns.
