Yilin Verse
孤獨特處,莫依為輔,心勞志苦。
Rowing a small boat alone, not knowing north from south. The fog-sea is vast and featureless — no shore to lean toward.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire within the lake transforms into water above fire — After Completion, where every element is in its proper place but stability is precarious. The original verse reads: 'Alone and isolated, with no one to rely on for support; the heart is weary, the will is bitter.' After Completion should be the moment of fulfilled order — water sits atop fire, the meal is cooked, everything aligns. Yet this figure is utterly alone, exhausted in heart and bitter in purpose. The perfection of After Completion contains its own loneliness: when the revolution succeeds and the new order is set, the revolutionary finds no role left to play. From Revolution to After Completion, the bittersweet transformation: the work is done, but the worker is spent and solitary.
