Yilin Verse

杜飛門啟,患憂大解。脩福行善,不為身禍。

The closed gate opens; worry and trouble are greatly resolved. Cultivating blessings, practicing virtue; one does not bring calamity upon oneself.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Clouds above heaven become paired lakes in The Joyous — friends sharing what they have learned. A closed door flies open; worry and anguish dissolve completely. Cultivating blessings and practicing goodness, one avoids bringing calamity upon oneself. The verse reads as pure relief: an obstruction that seemed permanent suddenly gives way, and the passage from darkness to light is instantaneous. The 'closed door opening' (杜飛門啟) is vivid — what was shut tight now springs wide. From Waiting to The Joyous, nourishment culminates in shared delight: the doubled lake is generosity flowing between equals. Joy comes not from acquiring more but from the dissolution of what blocked its arrival. Goodness practiced during the dark period is what opened the door.
