Yilin Verse

列女无夫,閔思苦憂。齊子无良,使我心愁。

Women of virtue without husbands; in sorrow they grieve and suffer. The son of Qi is without goodness; he makes my heart heavy with care.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder doubled yields to earth over fire: shock suppressed into the Darkening of the Light. A woman of virtue without a husband, anxious and grieving in bitter longing. The men of Qi are worthless, making my heart ache with sorrow. The verse echoes the Shijing ode 'Nan Shan' from the Qi Winds section, which censures the licentiousness of the Marquis of Qi and laments the suffering of virtuous women abandoned or mistreated. 'Qi men without virtue' (齊子無良) is a direct quotation. From The Arousing to Darkening of the Light, fire buried beneath the earth, brilliance is deliberately concealed. The virtuous woman, like the worthy minister under a corrupt ruler, must endure her sorrow in darkness, using obscurity as her only protection.
