Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
春生孳乳,萬物繁熾。君子所集,禍災不至。
Spring gives birth and nurtures; the ten thousand things flourish and thrive. Where the gentleman gathers; calamity and disaster do not reach.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder doubled meets lake over earth: shock gathered into the congregation of Gathering. In spring, creatures are born and nurtured; all things flourish and multiply. Where gentlemen gather, disaster does not arrive. The verse paints a vision of vernal abundance — the life-force of spring generating new growth everywhere, and the presence of worthy men creating a protective field. The two images reinforce each other: natural fertility and moral assembly jointly ward off calamity. From The Arousing to Gathering, lake above earth, the verse embodies the hexagram's promise. Thunder's vital energy, when it gathers rather than scatters, pools into the lake that sits upon the earth. The gentleman prepares for the unexpected precisely because abundance makes vigilance possible.
