Yilin Verse
旦種菽荳,暮成藿羹。心之所願,志快意愜。
At dawn plant beans and pulses; by evening, a stew of greens. What the heart desires, the will attains in full contentment.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind over mountain: trees grow slowly on the peak, yet the verse envisions instant fulfillment. Beans planted at dawn become broth by dusk; the heart's deepest wish is met with swift and total contentment. This telescopes the gradual into the instantaneous, a fantasy of effort rewarded without delay. The transformation from Development to the Creative captures this extraordinary surge: what grew patiently on the mountainside now encounters pure heaven, where initiative generates its own momentum and strength perpetuates itself. Gradual cultivation, once complete, releases self-sustaining creative force. The verse promises that disciplined patience will be repaid not incrementally but in a single, exhilarating burst of fulfillment.
