Commentary
Wind over mountain shifts to wind over earth: gradual development broadens into expansive contemplation. Spring geese fly east; one trades horses for gold. Profit returns tenfold, and the laden traveler journeys home. The wild goose, signature creature of hexagram 53, here marks the season for action. Spring is the time to trade, and the merchant who follows the goose's eastward path exchanges livestock for precious metal, multiplying his wealth. From Development to Contemplation, the wind that grew trees on the mountain now sweeps across the earth's broad surface. Contemplation's image is the sovereign surveying his realm from a tower: the merchant's tenfold gain reflects the overview that patient observation affords. Gradual study of the market yields commanding perspective.
