Yilin Verse
慈母念子,饗賜得士。蠻夷來服,以安王國。
A loving mother thinks of her children; feasting and bestowing, she wins the devotion of warriors. The barbarian tribes come to submit, thereby securing the kingdom.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind over mountain meets lake over mountain: gradual development opens into mutual Influence. A loving mother thinks of her child; feasting and gifts win over worthy retainers. Barbarian peoples come to submit, and the kingdom is secured. The verse traces influence outward in concentric circles: from the intimate bond of mother and child, to the patronage that secures loyalty, to the distant frontier where even outsiders yield. From Development to Influence, the mountain's lake rests in its hollow summit, empty and receptive. The gentleman receives others with openness. Gradual cultivation of relationships, beginning with familial tenderness and extending through generosity, creates the magnetic pull that draws even distant peoples into the kingdom's orbit.
