Yilin Verse
設罟捕魚,反得居諸。員困竭忠,伍氏夷誅。
Setting nets to catch fish, instead one hauls up a clay vessel. Yuan was trapped though he exhausted his loyalty; the house of Wu was leveled and slain.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind over mountain meets fire over lake: gradual development enters the estrangement of Opposition. One sets a net to catch fish but snares the sun instead. Yuan trapped and exhausted his loyalty; the Wu clan was exterminated root and branch. 'Yuan' likely refers to Wu Yuan, that is, Wu Zixu, whose personal name was Yuan. Wu Zixu exhausted his loyalty serving the state of Wu, warning King Fuchai against complacency toward Yue, but was slandered by Bo Pi and forced to commit suicide. His clan, the Wu family, was destroyed. From Development to Opposition, fire and lake move in opposite directions, never meeting. The loyal minister's gradual, painstaking service is repaid with execution. What was meant to catch fish catches the sun: the net of loyalty ensnares its own weaver.
