Yilin Verse

齊東郭廬,嫁于洛都。駿良美好,謀利過倍。

From Dongguo cottage in Qi, she marries into the Luo capital. The stallion is fine and splendid; her plans profit twofold.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder and fire blaze in Abundance, and a woman from Qi's eastern suburb marries into the capital at Luo. The 'Dongguolu' (東郭廬) likely refers to a humble dwelling outside Qi's eastern wall, while 'Luodu' (洛都) is the Zhou eastern capital, Luoyang. A woman of modest origins marries upward into the metropolitan center. The horses are fine and handsome, the profits double expectations. From Abundance to Modesty, earth conceals a mountain within: the transformation traces how outward splendor yields to quiet inner worth. The humble woman's successful marriage to the capital embodies Modesty's principle — mountain hidden beneath earth, genuine value elevated precisely because it does not advertise itself.
