Yilin Verse
魂孤无室,衘指不食。盜張民餌,見敵失福。
A solitary soul with no home, biting its finger, refusing to eat. The bandit displays bait for the people; confronting the foe, one loses fortune.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder and fire converge in Abundance, and the verse depicts spiritual desolation. A solitary ghost without shelter, biting its own fingers instead of eating. Bandits set bait for the people; encountering the enemy, fortune is lost. The hungry ghost (魂孤無室) is perhaps the most wretched figure in Chinese cosmology — an unanchored spirit with no descendants to feed it, reduced to gnawing its own hands. Meanwhile, predatory forces exploit the desperate populace. From Abundance to Revolution, fire within the lake: the verse presents the conditions that make revolution necessary. When the people are reduced to hungry ghosts and bandits prey upon them, the old order has exhausted its mandate. Revolution's fire burns within the lake, preparing to transform what has become intolerable.
