Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
陰變為陽,女化為男。治道大通,君臣相承。
Yin transforms into yang; the female changes to male. The way of governance opens wide; lord and minister sustain each other.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder and fire illuminate Abundance, and the verse proclaims a cosmic transformation. Yin transmutes into yang; female transforms into male. The Way of governance flows freely, and sovereign and minister sustain each other in harmony. This is not gender commentary but cosmological metaphor: the passive, receptive principle converts into the active, creative one. When such a transformation occurs in the political realm, blocked channels open and ruler and minister achieve perfect complementarity. From Abundance to Limitation, water above the lake: Limitation sets proper measures and boundaries. The yin-to-yang transformation succeeds precisely because it occurs within limits — not wild transmutation but structured conversion, like water measured above the lake in proper proportion.
