Yilin Verse

土陷四維,安平不危。利以居止,保有玉女。

The earth sinks at the four edges; peaceful and level, without peril. Favorable for settling and staying; one keeps a jade maiden safe.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire on the mountain, and the four corners of the earth settle into tranquil stability. Though the ground has shifted at its edges, the center holds — level, peaceful, free from peril. It is advantageous to dwell here, and a jade-like maiden awaits. The verse presents the wanderer's ultimate reward: after upheaval at the periphery, the heartland remains secure, offering both safety and domestic happiness. From The Wanderer to The Family, wind rises from fire, warmth radiating outward as gentle influence. The traveler who finds his way home discovers that true security lies within the household. The 'jade maiden' symbolizes refined domestic virtue — the family that one builds after wandering is the lasting treasure.
