Yilin Verse

霧露早霜,日暗不明。陰陽孽疾,年穀大傷。

Mist and dew, early frost; the sun dims and gives no light. Yin and yang breed affliction; the year's grain suffers greatly.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind upon wind transforms into heaven over lake: the Gentle becomes Treading. Fog and dew descend as early frost; the sun darkens and cannot shine. Yin and yang breed pestilence, and the year's grain suffers grievous damage. The verse paints an agricultural disaster driven by unseasonable weather — frost arriving too early, sunlight blocked, the vital balance of cosmic forces disrupted. From The Gentle to Treading, the transformation is grimly apt: treading means walking on dangerous ground, stepping on the tiger's tail. When wind's gentle influence is corrupted into miasma and unseasonable cold, even the cosmic order stumbles. The gentleman who should distinguish high from low finds the natural hierarchy itself inverted — heaven's light obscured, earth's harvest ruined.
