Yilin Verse

讒言亂國,覆是為非。伯奇流離,恭子憂哀。

Slanderous words disorder the state; right becomes wrong. Bo Qi wanders in exile; the filial son grieves in sorrow.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind upon wind transforms into wind over earth: the Gentle becomes Contemplation. Slanderous words throw the state into chaos, inverting right and wrong. Boqi wanders in exile; the virtuous son grieves in sorrow. Boqi was the son of the Zhou minister Yin Jifu, falsely accused by his stepmother of impropriety. His father believed the slander and exiled him. In the wilderness, Boqi composed the famous guqin lament 'Treading on Frost.' From The Gentle to Contemplation, wind sweeping over the earth should allow the ruler to observe his people and set right teachings. But here the wind carries only slander, and contemplation reveals injustice: the filial son cast out, truth overturned by a poisoned tongue.
