Yilin Verse

齎貝贖狸,不聽我辭。繫於虎鬚,牽不得來。

Striking stone with a feather; the wind cannot move it. Fine rain urges travel on, but the dry wheel is sunk in mud.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind upon wind transforms into water above heaven: penetration becomes patient waiting. The original verse reads: 'Offering cowries to ransom a fox-cat, it will not heed my plea. Tied to a tiger's whiskers, it cannot be pulled free.' Precious shells are spent in a futile transaction — the creature refuses to comply, and the one who grasps the tiger's beard discovers he cannot let go. Each image compounds helplessness: payment is rejected, force is trapped. From The Gentle to Waiting, the transformation reframes impotence as enforced patience. Clouds gather above heaven but rain has not yet fallen. When neither wealth nor strength can move the situation, the only remaining strategy is to wait — not as resignation, but as the discipline of enduring what cannot yet be resolved.
