Yilin Verse

一簧兩舌,妄言陷語。三奸惑虛,曾母投杼。

One reed, two tongues; wild words and snaring speech. Three deceivers weave falsehood; even Zengzi's mother cast down her shuttle.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind upon wind transforms into heaven over water: penetration twists into contention. A double-reed tongue, a mouth that speaks two ways — reckless slander and entrapping words. Three deceivers agitate an empty rumor until even Zeng's mother throws down her shuttle. The verse directly quotes the famous parable: when three people told Zeng Shen's mother that her son had killed a man, she twice disbelieved, but on the third report threw down her loom shuttle and fled in terror. Even the deepest maternal trust can be broken by persistent falsehood. From The Gentle to Conflict, wind's persuasive power is weaponized: what should carry truthful commands instead spreads slander. Heaven and water move in opposite directions, and the duplicitous tongue drives wedges where trust should hold.
