Yilin Verse

叔迎兄弟,遇恭在陽。君子季姬。並坐鼓簧。

The younger brother welcomes his elder brothers, meeting in respectful courtesy at Yang. The noble man and Lady Ji sit together playing the reed organ.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Paired lakes rise above heaven — Breakthrough, the lake overflowing in decisive release. A younger brother welcomes elder brothers; they meet with reverence at Yang. A noble gentleman and Lady Ji sit together playing reed pipes. The scene depicts family reunion and harmonious music-making — the quintessence of joyful fellowship. From The Joyous to Breakthrough, domestic delight concentrates until it overflows. The lake that rises above heaven must eventually breach its banks, but here the breakthrough is not destructive: it is the moment when contained happiness spills over into celebration. Music shared between kin is joy that cannot be held back.
