Yilin Verse
徙巢去家,南遇白烏。東西受福,與喜相得。
Moving nest, leaving home, heading south to meet a white raven. East and west receive blessing, finding joy together.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Paired lakes meet heaven below wind — Coming to Meet, the unexpected encounter. Leaving the nest and departing home, one meets a white crow in the south. East and west, blessings are received; joy and fortune coincide. The white crow is an auspicious omen in Chinese tradition — a rare creature whose appearance signals divine favor. From The Joyous to Coming to Meet, the verse traces how leaving the familiar opens space for chance encounters with the numinous. Wind beneath heaven carries messages across the world; the sovereign issues decrees that reach the four quarters. The departure from home is not exile but expansion — the white crow appears only to those who have left their nest.
