Yilin Verse
舜登大禹,石夷之野。徵詣玉闕,拜治水土。

Commentary
Paired lakes gather upon the earth — Gathering, where the community assembles under a common purpose. Emperor Shun elevated Yu the Great, summoning him from the wilds of Shiyi to the jade palace, appointing him to govern water and soil. According to tradition, Shun recognized Yu's extraordinary capacity and charged him with taming the floods — the foundational act of Chinese civilization. From The Joyous to Gathering, the verse embodies the hexagram's essential dynamic: recognizing talent and assembling it for a common purpose. The lake pools upon the earth as people naturally congregate around a worthy leader. Yu's appointment was the original gathering — summoning merit to serve the realm.
