Yilin Verse
三人俱行,別離將食。一身五心,反復迷惑。
Three people journey together, then part to eat separately. One body, five hearts; turning back and forth in confusion.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Paired lakes face doubled mountains — Keeping Still, where thought does not transgress its bounds. Three people travel together but are about to separate for their meal. One body harbors five different hearts, turning back and forth in confusion. The verse captures a moment of communal breakdown: companions who should share a meal instead fragment into competing intentions. From The Joyous to Keeping Still, shared joy fractures into isolated stillness. The mountain's virtue is knowing one's position, yet these three cannot agree on a common direction. When each person holds a different agenda, even the simplest act — eating together — becomes impossible. Stillness here is paralysis born of discord.
