Commentary
Paired lakes meet wind above the mountain — Development, the gradual advance of the wild goose. Three tigers attack a wolf, their strength vastly mismatched. Like a hawk striking a pheasant, one blow destroys it. The verse depicts overwhelming force applied with precision — not gradual development but instantaneous, decisive action. From The Joyous to Development, the paradox deepens: Development counsels patience, yet the verse celebrates swift annihilation. The resolution lies in the tree growing on the mountain: the long, slow growth of the tree (years of cultivation) is what makes the hawk's single decisive strike possible. Patient development culminates in the moment when overwhelming advantage is deployed without hesitation.
