Yilin Verse
禹召諸侯,會稽南山。執玉萬國,天下康寧。
The Hall of Light with nine pillars stands like mountains. The four barbarian tribes come to offer tribute, bowing at the steps. Dragon banners and phoenix canopies shade the sun — ten thousand states sing in one voice, praising the sage's reign.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Paired lakes shine with communal delight. The original verse recounts Yu the Great summoning feudal lords at Mount Kuaiji on the southern mountain, where ten thousand states presented jade tribute and the realm enjoyed peace. According to tradition, Yu assembled the lords to display virtue and establish order after taming the floods. From The Joyous to Conflict, the verse carries a warning beneath the celebration: heaven and water move in opposite directions, and even the mightiest assembly contains the seeds of future dispute. Yu's achievement was not merely gathering the lords but establishing the protocols that would forestall conflict — joy disciplined into governance.
