Yilin Verse

合體比翼,嘉耦相得。與君同好,使我有福。

Joined in body, paired in wing; a fine match well met. In harmony with my lord; bringing me good fortune.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven and water oppose, but two beings join in flight — bodies merged, wings shared. This is the fabled 'paired-eye fish and shared-wing birds' of classical mythology: creatures that can only move in unison. A perfect match is found, and shared affection brings lasting blessing. From Conflict to Innocence, thunder moves beneath heaven in spontaneous accord. Wuwang means 'without falseness' — action that arises naturally, uncorrupted by calculation. The verse embodies this: two halves that need no negotiation to fit together. Where Conflict tears apart, Innocence reunites through unforced resonance. The blessing flows not from strategy but from the simple fact of being genuinely matched.
