Yilin Verse
奎軫溫湯,過角宿房。宣時布和,無所不通。
Kui and Zhen warm the bath; passing Jiao, Su, and Fang. Proclaiming the season, spreading harmony; nothing fails to flow through.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven and water oppose, yet the celestial mechanisms restore balance. The verse traces the movements of the lunar lodges Kui and Zhen through warm currents, passing the mansions Jiao, Su, and Fang — a progression through the twenty-eight lunar mansions that maps the seasonal cycle. When the stars are announced in their proper sequence, warmth and harmony spread everywhere, and nothing is blocked. From Conflict to Youthful Folly, opposition gives way to the spring emerging beneath the mountain. The cosmic order, when observed and followed rather than forced, dispels confusion naturally. The astronomer who reads the heavens correctly channels Meng's lesson: act decisively but nurture understanding, and the way opens of itself.
