Yilin Verse

避患東西,反入禍門。糟糠不足,憂愁我心。

Fleeing trouble east and west, only to enter calamity's gate. Chaff and husks not enough; worry and sorrow fill my heart.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven and water oppose, and the final verse closes the circle with unresolved misery. Fleeing east and west to avoid disaster, one stumbles instead into the gate of further calamity. Even chaff and bran are insufficient — basic sustenance fails. Worry gnaws at the heart. Every evasive action deepens the trap. From Conflict to Before Completion, fire hovers above water without contact — the eternal almost, the task perpetually unfinished. Weiji is the Yi's final word: nothing is ever fully resolved. The verse captures this with brutal economy. The one who runs from conflict finds only more conflict; the one who cannot afford even husks has nothing left to lose yet cannot stop losing. Before Completion is not failure — it is the permanent condition of being mid-crossing.
