Yilin Verse

比目四翼,相倚為福。姜氏季氏,與君合德。

Paired eyes, shared wings; leaning on each other for blessing. The Jiang and Ji clans unite their virtue with the lord.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water over lake pairs what belongs together, and this verse celebrates such pairing in its most intimate form. Paired-eye fish and shared-wing birds — mythological creatures that can only survive as couples — become the image of perfect interdependence. The Jiang and Ji clans unite with the ruler in shared virtue, an allusion to noble houses whose marriages cemented political alliances in the Zhou feudal order. From Limitation to Following, the transformation reveals how proper boundaries enable genuine devotion. Thunder rests within the lake, yielding to the season's rhythm. Limitation's careful matching of partners becomes Following's willing surrender to a harmonious bond. When two halves find their proper fit, constraint dissolves into natural allegiance.
