Yilin Verse
大步小車,南到喜家。送我豹裘,與福載來。
With great strides and small cart, I arrive south at a joyful home. They present me a leopard-fur robe; blessings accompany my return.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water over lake measures and distributes, and here the distribution is generous. Striding boldly with a small cart, one travels south to a house of joy. Gifts arrive — a fine leopard-skin robe — and blessings come along with them. The verse is a tableau of auspicious visitation: movement toward warmth, reception of valuable gifts, the convergence of good fortune and good company. From Limitation to Contemplation, the transformation elevates the scene. Wind moves over the earth as the sage-king surveys his realm, observing customs and setting teachings. The visitor arriving with leopard fur is not merely a guest but a figure whose journey broadens perspective. Limitation's careful allotment becomes Contemplation's wide view — what was measured in the source now opens into panoramic understanding in the target.
